Is "Prompt Engineer" still a real job title?

Mostly no — search interest in the exact title on Indeed peaked at 144 searches per million U.S. searches in April 2023 and had fallen to roughly 20-30 per million by mid-2025, and a Microsoft survey of 31,000 workers ranked it second-to-last among new roles companies are considering adding over the next 12-18 months. The skill didn't disappear — it got absorbed into broader roles like AI Engineer, where it's one of several core capabilities rather than the whole job.

So why does this page exist?

Because the skill is still very real, even though the standalone title mostly isn't. This page shows roles on this board where prompt engineering is a genuine, stated requirement — most aren't titled "Prompt Engineer," they're AI Engineer, backend, or applied-AI roles that need it as part of a broader job.

What skills matter for prompt engineering work today?

Prompt engineering today is usually one piece of a larger AI-engineering skill set, not a standalone specialty. Core skills: Iterative prompt design and testing, Evaluation of model outputs, Familiarity with LLM APIs (OpenAI, Anthropic, and others), RAG and agent/tool-calling patterns.

What's the salary range?

Based on the 185 listings on this board with a USD salary range as of October 7, 2026, the middle half of them pays roughly $165K to $239K a year, with a median of $196K — a small sample, so treat it as a directional signal, not a guarantee. Monthly pay is converted to a yearly figure here; hourly and one-time pay is left out.
